About Tabby

Tabby is a free website for splitting costs with a group. One person starts a tab and shares the link, then everyone adds what they paid and Tabby keeps a running total of who owes who. Nobody downloads an app or makes an account.

Tabby in short

  • Free to use. There's no paid plan and no ads.
  • Works in the browser on any phone or computer, so there's nothing to install.
  • No signup for anyone, including the person who starts the tab.
  • Split each expense between the whole group or just the people it was for.
  • Shows who owes who, and nets out what any two people owe each other so they only need one payment.
  • Each tab uses pounds, euros or US dollars.
  • Made by Arthur Cheek in the UK.

Not the Tabby payments app

There's a buy now, pay later company that's also called Tabby. It has nothing to do with this one. Tabby at tabby.money doesn't lend money, take payments or run credit checks. It just keeps track of what a group has spent and who needs to pay who back.

Questions

What is Tabby? +

A free website for splitting group expenses. You start a tab, send the link to your group and everyone adds what they paid. Tabby works out who owes who.

Is Tabby free? +

Yes. There's no paid plan, no premium tier and no ads.

Do I need to download an app? +

No. Tabby runs in your browser, so it works on any phone or computer. Open the link and you're in.

Does anyone need to sign up? +

No. Nobody makes an account, not even the person who starts the tab. When you open the link you pick your name, or add it, and your browser remembers you next time.

How do I get my group on the tab? +

Send them the tab's link, usually in the group chat. Anyone with the link can open the tab, add expenses and settle up.

Can I split a cost between only some of the group? +

Yes. An expense is split between everyone in the tab unless you choose who it was for. If two of you shared a taxi, only those two pay for it.

Can I split an expense unevenly? +

Not in one go. Each expense is shared equally between the people you pick. If one person should pay more, add the difference as a separate expense just for them.

How does Tabby work out who owes who? +

It adds up what each person paid and their share of every expense. Between any two people it nets out what they owe each other, so one payment settles them. Tap on someone to see the expenses behind the number.

Does Tabby send the money? +

No, Tabby never touches your money. Pay each other the way you normally would, like a bank transfer or cash, then mark it settled on the tab.

Which currencies can I use? +

Pounds (GBP), euros (EUR) and US dollars (USD). You pick one when you start a tab and every expense in it uses that currency. Tabby doesn't convert between currencies.

How many people can be in a tab? +

Up to 30.

Is my tab private? +

Each tab has its own long, random link, and tabs are kept out of search engines. Anyone who has the link can open it though, so only share it with the people in the group.

Can other people change expenses? +

Yes. Anyone in the tab can add, edit or delete expenses. Tabby works on trust, a bit like a shared note, so it's meant for groups who know each other.

Can I delete a tab? +

Yes. Anyone in the tab can delete it from the tab's settings. That removes it for everyone, along with every expense and payment in it.

What do people use Tabby for? +

Mostly trips and one-off group costs: holidays, stag and hen dos, ski trips, Airbnbs and big dinners out. It suits anything where a few people keep paying for the group and everyone needs to square up afterwards.

Is this the same Tabby as the buy now, pay later app? +

No. That's a separate payments company. This Tabby, at tabby.money, is a small expense splitter for groups. It doesn't offer credit or take payments.

Who made Tabby? +

Arthur Cheek, in the UK.

Got a trip coming up?
